FAQ

Questions people ask before they start.

The basics

GateBeacon turns a computer you already own into a place that can host apps — like Nextcloud or WordPress — and gives each one a public web address, so anyone can open it from a browser, from anywhere.

No. Your apps and files stay on your own device the whole time. GateBeacon just creates the secure link between your device and the internet — think of it as a doorway, not storage.

Not quite. A VPN connects you into a private network. GateBeacon does the opposite — it takes an app already running on your machine and gives it its own public, secure web address that anyone can visit.

No. Visitors only ever see your GateBeacon web address. Your home connection and its address stay hidden.

Yes. Your files and data never leave your device. GateBeacon only carries encrypted traffic between your app and the visitor — it can't see or read what's inside.

Devices & requirements

A Windows or Linux computer that's usually switched on and connected to the internet, plus a free GateBeacon account. No router changes and no technical setup required.

Any regular PC, laptop, mini PC, or home server works. A low-power machine is fine for lighter apps; apps like photo backup are more comfortable with more RAM and storage.

Yes. Windows 10 and 11 are fully supported, alongside Linux (Ubuntu).

Not yet. Raspberry Pi and other small ARM-based devices aren't supported today — GateBeacon currently works on regular Windows and Linux (Ubuntu) PCs.

Yes — an app is only reachable while the device hosting it is on and connected. If the device is off or offline, that app's address goes quiet until it's back online.
